Programs

Kivalliq Business Development Centre (KBDC) serves the Kivalliq Communities of Arviat, Whale Cove, Rankin Inlet, Baker Lake, Chesterfield Inlet, Coral Harbour, and Naujaat.

We promote and provide loan funds for the development of new businesses and the expansion of existing businesses in the Kivalliq region.  We are not just a lender or passive investor; we want to work with entrepreneurs by helping you develop your skills and help your business to succeed. In addition, we offer a range of essential services and support for businesses, entrepreneurs, and social enterprises.

Indigenous Women Entrepreneur (IWE) Micro-Loan Fund

Empowering Indigenous Women in Business

The Indigenous Women Entrepreneur (IWE) Micro-Loan Fund is designed to help Inuit, First Nations, and Métis women start, expand, or enhance their businesses. This fund provides accessible, flexible financing and support to empower Indigenous women in building strong, sustainable enterprises that strengthen their communities.

Fund Overview
  • Maximum Loan Amount: Up to $25,000
  • Grant Portion: 35% non-repayable
  • Loan Portion: 65% repayable at 5% interest
  • Equity Requirement: Minimum 5% of total project costs contributed by the applicant
  • Term: Up to 4 years (flexible repayment schedules available)
  • Eligible Uses: Business start-up or expansion, equipment, tools, technology, marketing, training, or inventory
What You’ll Need to Apply
  • Completed Application Form
  • Short Business Plan OR the IWE Business Planning Guide to outline your business concept, goals, financial projections and how the funds will be used
  • Quotes or Estimates for all major purchases (required for items over $1,000)
  • 5% Cash Equity Contribution of total project costs
  • Supporting Documents such as: proof of Indigenous ancestry, ID, resume, business license, insurance, and financial statements for existing businesses

KBDC will work with you on your application and provide guidance on completing your business plan and cash-flow forecast.

Who Can Apply
  • Indigenous women (Inuit, First Nations, Métis) aged 18+
  • Individuals starting or expanding a business in Nunavut
  • Applicants who can contribute a small amount of equity and demonstrate a viable business idea

In addition to financial assistance, participants gain access to:

  • Advisory and aftercare services
  • Training workshops and peer networks
  • Financial literacy resources
